Tragic Series of Crashes on I-66 in Fairfax County Result in One Fatality

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. – Tragedy struck on the roads of Fairfax County as Virginia State Police reported a fatal outcome following a series of crashes on I-66. The incidents unfolded on Wednesday, leading to a chain reaction of collisions that resulted in injuries and one loss of life.

According to VSP, the initial crash involved three vehicles in the westbound lanes of I-66 near the 51 mile marker. Despite one driver sustaining injuries in this collision, they opted not to receive medical treatment at the scene. Subsequently, a second crash occurred minutes later in the same direction, this time near the Nutley Street exit. Notably, a tow truck en route to assist with the first crash was involved in this subsequent collision.

VSP spokeswoman Corinne Geller revealed that the tow truck had slowed down, prompting an SUV to rear-end it before careening into a pickup truck. Tragically, the driver of the SUV was rushed to Fairfax INOVA Hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries. However, the tow truck driver, though injured, was expected to survive and was also taken to the hospital for treatment.

Fortunately, the driver of the pickup truck emerged from the ordeal unscathed. Nevertheless, the wave of accidents did not cease, as a third wreck unfolded at mile marker 56 on the interstate at 7:35 p.m. This crash involved two vehicles, with one driver requiring transportation to the hospital for medical attention.

The sequence of events on I-66 serves as a grim reminder of the dangers present on the roadways and the importance of exercising caution to prevent such tragedies. The Virginia State Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding these crashes as the community mourns the loss of life and hopes for the swift recovery of those injured.
