Tragic Bus Crash Claims Multiple Lives on Accra-Kumasi Highway: Eyewitnesses Report Horrific Scene

Accra, Ghana – A tragic road accident on the Accra to Kumasi highway has resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries early Friday morning. The collision involved a red Scania Marcopolo bus traveling from Kumasi to Accra and a truck heading in the opposite direction at Atwemamena, a community between Bunso and Akyem Asafo in the Eastern Region.

Eyewitnesses have described the accident as severe, with several passengers, including the bus driver and mate, losing their lives. Victims have been rushed to Suhum Government Hospital for emergency care. This devastating event adds to the concerning trend of frequent road crashes in Ghana.

In the first quarter of this year alone, Ghana recorded 4,503 road accidents, resulting in 829 deaths and 4,955 injuries. The Orthopaedic Association of Ghana (OAG) has urged the government to implement comprehensive trauma care systems and enforce strict road safety measures.

At the OAG’s 4th Annual General and Scientific Conference at Kwahu on May 16, the need for timely treatment for trauma patients, strict enforcement of road traffic laws, promotion of helmet and seat belt use, and improvements in road infrastructure was emphasized. These measures are crucial for enhancing safety for all road users in Ghana.

The tragic accident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of prioritizing road safety and implementing measures to reduce the number of fatalities and injuries on Ghana’s roads. The OAG’s call for action highlights the urgent need for significant improvements in road safety practices to prevent further loss of life in preventable accidents.
