Second Man Charged in Fatal Minneapolis Shootout Involving Eagan and Eden Prairie Firefighter

Minneapolis, Minnesota – A second man faces criminal charges in connection with a shootout that tragically claimed the life of a firefighter earlier this month.

Dallas Antonio Villarreal-Griffin, 27, from Columbia Heights, was charged with second-degree riot after allegedly being involved in an exchange of gunfire that resulted in the death of Eagan and Eden Prairie firefighter Joseph Johns. The incident took place near the Whiskey Junction Bar in Minneapolis.

Villarreal-Griffin was arrested after admitting to authorities that he fired a “ghost gun” at an opposing group during the shootout. His alleged associate, 28-year-old Marquise Trevone Hammonds-Ford, of Monticello, had been arrested and charged earlier in connection with the incident.

According to court documents, the shooting occurred between two groups, with both Villarreal-Griffin and Hammonds-Ford being part of the group that instigated the violence. The shootout took place during a gathering at the bar to celebrate the anniversary of a motorcycle club’s founding.

Surveillance footage revealed that Villarreal-Griffin and Hammonds-Ford were among a group of individuals who allegedly intimidated and antagonized patrons at the bar by brandishing firearms and making provocative statements. The violence escalated when Hammonds-Ford reportedly fired the first shots, sparking a shootout between the two groups.

Despite first responders’ efforts to save him, Johns succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Investigators have yet to determine which individual fired the shots that claimed Johns’ life.

Villarreal-Griffin’s involvement in the incident was further corroborated by his actions during the shooting, where he was seen firing shots at the opposing group before fleeing the scene in a vehicle. He later denied any involvement while receiving medical treatment at a local hospital.

As the investigation into the shooting continues, Villarreal-Griffin remains in custody, with a criminal history that includes prior cases related to domestic violence and abuse. Authorities are continuing to search for additional suspects involved in the deadly shootout.

The community mourns the loss of firefighter Joseph Johns as law enforcement works diligently to bring those responsible for the tragic incident to justice.
