Pro-Israeli Counterprotester Arrested at UCLA after Alleged Assault with Wooden Pole

Los Angeles, California – A pro-Israeli counterprotester faces charges after his arrest by UCLA police following an alleged assault on occupants of a protest encampment with a wooden pole. The UCLA Police Department has taken action, interviewing witnesses, reviewing security footage, and identifying the suspect, who was not affiliated with the campus. The individual was among a group accused of violent attacks on students, faculty, and staff during a pro-Palestinian demonstration on April 30.

The 18-year-old man, identified as Edan On, was detained in Beverly Hills and booked for felony assault with a deadly weapon. Currently held on $30,000 bail in Los Angeles County jail, this arrest marks the first of a counterprotester involved in the incident. The UCLA Police Department is committed to thoroughly investigating any reported acts of violence associated with protest or counter-protest activities from April 25 to May 2, 2024, with ongoing investigations.

Among those targeted by counterprotesters were a group of student reporters on April 30. The severity of the violence prompted an independent review of the university’s response and law enforcement actions during the campus unrest. The incident reflects a larger trend within universities across the nation, facing disruptions due to protests related to the Israel-Hamas conflict.

In May, over 200 individuals were arrested at UCLA as clashes between police and protesters unfolded over several hours. The turmoil led to the removal and reassignment of Campus Police Chief John Thomas following criticism of security failures that culminated in violence at the pro-Palestinian encampment. Additionally, UCLA Chancellor Gene Block faced congressional scrutiny over his handling of complaints regarding antisemitism on campus during a recent hearing.

As the investigation continues and tensions remain high, the community is left grappling with the aftermath of these events, highlighting the need for dialogue, understanding, and accountability in navigating complex and sensitive issues within academic settings.
