Man on parole for manslaughter arrested for violent assault on girlfriend in Durham Region

OSHAWA, Ontario – A man with a history of manslaughter has been apprehended once again for a violent altercation with his girlfriend, according to Durham Regional Police. The 33-year-old individual from Oshawa allegedly ambushed his girlfriend in her car, physically assaulting and choking her before fleeing the scene and removing his ankle monitor.

The victim managed to break free and call for help, leading authorities to track down the suspect in Barrie, where he was taken into custody. Charges against him include spousal assault, choking, failure to comply with release orders, mischief, and violating probation terms. To safeguard the victim’s identity, the police have chosen not to disclose the man’s name.

This incident follows another recent case of domestic violence in Durham Region, where Jennifer Polak was tragically killed in Ajax, purportedly by her boyfriend. In response to a surge in similar cases, the Ontario government is contemplating declaring intimate partner violence an epidemic province-wide, prompting municipalities like Durham, Hamilton, Brampton, and Mississauga to express similar concerns.

“Dating violence can manifest in various forms such as physical, emotional, financial, and psychological abuse,” Durham Police remarked, emphasizing the need for community support and concerted efforts to combat domestic violence. Victim Services of Durham Region stands as a vital resource available 24/7, collaborating closely with law enforcement to address cases involving abuse and human trafficking.

The string of recent incidents underscores the importance of fostering a safe environment and providing comprehensive support to victims of domestic violence. By raising awareness, offering assistance services, and advocating for change, communities can take proactive steps to address the pervasive issue of intimate partner violence.
