Man Convicted of Voluntary Manslaughter in Fatal Shooting of Uncle

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – A Folcroft man has been found guilty of voluntary manslaughter for fatally shooting his uncle outside a Clifton Heights garage last year. Birchett L. King, 26, is set to be sentenced on July 19 by Court of Common Pleas Judge Kevin F. Kelly and is currently in custody at the county jail in Concord.

The incident took place at ATP Motors on Baltimore Ave. when King shot 39-year-old James Ford, leading to his death. King surrendered to police four days later and has been detained since. Video evidence showcased the altercation between King and Ford before the fatal shooting, with King seen firing at Ford without seeking cover.

Despite claims of self-defense, witnesses stated that Ford did not appear to pose a threat during the altercation, contradicting King’s assertions. Forensic analysis revealed that Ford had been hit multiple times, including shots that damaged vital organs. His toxicology report indicated the presence of substances in his system.

King’s defense team argued that he felt threatened by Ford’s behavior that day and acted out of fear for his safety. However, prosecutors highlighted inconsistencies in King’s recount of events and the lack of evidence supporting his claims of imminent danger.

The court deliberated on the case, with both sides presenting their arguments regarding King’s actions leading up to and following the shooting. Ultimately, the jury found King guilty of voluntary manslaughter, concluding that his actions were not justified by the circumstances presented during the trial.

As the sentencing date approaches, the community awaits the final decision on King’s punishment for his role in the tragic incident. The outcome of this case will serve as a reminder of the importance of accountability and justice in addressing acts of violence within the community.
