Maine Police Fatally Shoot Man Involved in Hours-Long Standoff and House Fires

AUBURN, Maine – Maine police shot and killed a man who allegedly fired at officers during a lengthy incident early Saturday morning, which also resulted in two homes in Auburn catching fire, according to Maine State Police.

The man, identified as 43-year-old Leein Hinkley, had been released on bail just days prior following a probation violation, police stated.

The chaotic series of events began with a 911 call from a woman on Russell Avenue in Auburn, reporting a man attempting to break into her home and engaging in a physical altercation with her significant other. Gunshots could be heard during the call, and the woman was able to escape through a window. However, she was later heard screaming from inside the burning house and is currently unaccounted for.

Hinkley then reportedly opened fire at Auburn police officers who responded to the scene, eventually seeking refuge in a nearby garage after multiple confrontations with law enforcement.

As the situation unfolded, a second home on Russell Avenue caught fire, leading to the destruction of both residences, with a third home sustaining damage, according to Maine State Police spokesperson Shannon Moss.

Hinkley proceeded to move to another residence on the street, where he climbed onto the roof brandishing a gun. Hours later, members of the Maine State Police tactical team fatally shot him on the roof. The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, as per standard procedure in such cases.

“Auburn has witnessed a particularly intense and tragic morning,” expressed Deputy Chief Timothy Cougle. “Events like this instill fear in our community, especially following the events of this past October.”

The incident highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement in handling high-stress situations and emphasizes the importance of safety protocols in such volatile encounters. Investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is ongoing to determine the events leading up to the tragic outcome.
