City Employee Charged in Fatal Shooting at Hang Glider Park Sparks Investigation and Controversy

Alamogordo, New Mexico – Former Alamogordo city employee Logan Jacobs is facing charges in the September 2023 shooting death of Joseph “Joe” Romo at Hang Glider Park. According to court documents, Jacobs allegedly shot Romo multiple times, claiming self-defense as the reason for his actions.

The altercation between Jacobs and Romo began at their office and escalated to the park, where the fatal incident took place. Witnesses reported to police that Jacobs and Romo, both employees of the Alamogordo City Parks Department, had a dispute that led to the confrontation at Hang Glider Park on North Florida Avenue.

Jacobs explained to authorities that Romo aggressively approached him upon his arrival at the park, striking him in the throat. Feeling threatened and unable to breathe, Jacobs discharged his gun in what he described as self-defense. Witnesses at the scene corroborated Jacobs’ account, stating that Romo attempted to punch Jacobs but did not make contact before Jacobs resorted to using deadly force.

Further investigation into Jacobs’ background revealed two prior incidents involving gun violence. In February 2023, Jacobs allegedly threatened a neighbor for being too loud, and in July of the same year, he reportedly made threats involving a gun during a disagreement at a softball game. Despite these incidents, Jacobs had not faced charges until the shooting death of Romo.

District Judge Stephen Ochoa denied a motion to reconsider Jacobs’ incarceration pending a trial in the homicide case. A jury trial is pending, and if found guilty, Jacobs could face a life sentence without the possibility of parole. The case highlights the importance of addressing conflicts peacefully and the potential consequences of resorting to violence in any situation.
