Chisholm Trail Arts Council’s Annual Arts Explosion Week Almost Full: Exclusive Art Classes for Youth This July

Duncan, Oklahoma — The Chisholm Trail Arts Council’s annual Arts Explosion week is pacing towards a sold-out event as parents and young enthusiasts hurry to secure the remaining spots. Slated for July 15-19 at the Stephens County Fair and Expo Center, the event promises a vibrant array of creative activities centered on a Western theme, tailored to engage young artists across different age groups.

This year’s Arts Explosion will cater to three distinct groups based on school grade levels: third through fifth grades, kindergarten through second grade, and sixth through twelfth grades. Darcy Reeves, the executive director of CTAC, expressed excitement about the uptake of the program. “The response has been overwhelmingly positive,” Reeves said, noting that the slots for the youngest and oldest groups have already been filled.

For those quick enough to register before spaces run out, the week-long camp offers an enriching schedule from 9 a.m. to noon for the third to fifth graders at a cost of $70. Just six spots remain in this first group.

The faculty this year is a mix of returning educators and fresh faces bringing diverse artistic backgrounds to the table. Educators such as Cash Wheeler, and Pam Ferguson, a former teacher, will be joined by Trey Hayes, a recipient of the Governor’s Award from Tishomingo, and Steven Dixon of Second Chance Ranch, among others.

Notably, newcomers like Alyssa Cox, a CTAC former assistant now pursuing her master’s at Texas Women’s College, and Josh Conway, who owns Missing Bristles in Marlow, add substantial expertise to the already impressive lineup.

The curriculum is equally diverse. The youngest cohort will delve into watercolors and basic art techniques, while primary school students will explore everything from pottery to acrylics and watercolors. The oldest group will tackle more complex themes such] as American Indian art and history, print-making, and macramé, providing them with both traditional and modern artistic experiences.

To top off the week of immersive learning and creativity, a family night is scheduled for July 19 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., where the students’ artworks will be displayed for family and friends.

Participation fees cover all necessary supplies, though a late fee of $10 will be applied to registrations made after July 1. This measure ensures all participants are equipped without delay for their artistic explorations.

Those interested in securing a spot for this culturally enriching program can contact the CTAC Art Gallery or visit the Chisholm Trail Arts Council’s website for more registration details. The fairgrounds, where the event takes place, is conveniently located at 2002 S. 13th St., with the CTAC Gallery itself situated at 810 W. Walnut Ave., both in Duncan, ensuring easy access for all attendees.

As the Arts Explosion week approaches, the anticipation within the community builds, promising not just a celebration of artistic prowess but a nurturing ground for the next generation of creators.
