Bradford, England – A 22-year-old man has begun serving a 16-month prison sentence after being convicted for his role in a violent attack that left a victim injured and traumatized. The incident took place on October 29, 2023, and was described by the presiding judge as cowardly and unprovoked.
At Bradford Crown Court, Recorder Geraldine Kelly KC condemned the actions of Riegan Cooney as “nasty” and noted the frightening circumstances faced by the victim, who was attacked from behind while walking alone at night. Judge Kelly emphasized that the assault not only caused physical injuries, including a broken jawbone, but also left a lasting emotional impact on the victim.
The court proceedings revealed that Cooney and an accomplice confronted the victim outside a Co-op store and attempted to sell stolen coffee. When the victim declined the offer and attempted to distance himself, he was violently struck from behind. While on the ground, he endured multiple kicks and punches before the assailants fled the scene.
The victim eventually made his way home, where he called for help. Medical examinations at Bradford Royal Infirmary confirmed severe injuries, including fractures to his jaw that required surgical intervention involving metal plates and screws.
Law enforcement identified Cooney through CCTV footage, and it was disclosed that he had a lengthy criminal record, including convictions for harassment and possession of an offensive weapon. He later pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm.
During the hearing, Cooney’s defense attorney, Abdul Shakoor, argued that the young man had shown remorse for his actions and claimed he was no longer the same person he was two years prior. Shakoor noted Cooney’s efforts to reduce substance use and suggested a suspended sentence might be appropriate to allow for rehabilitation.
However, Judge Kelly took a harsher stance, indicating that Cooney’s history of offenses, coupled with his intoxication during the attack, posed a significant risk to public safety. She stated that the nature of the assault warranted immediate custody, asserting that any lesser sentence would send the wrong message about the consequences of such violent behavior.
In her closing remarks, Judge Kelly stressed the seriousness of the crime, highlighting the premeditated nature of the assault and the vulnerability of the victim. She concluded that imprisonment was the only suitable response to deter future offenses and protect the community.
