Woman in Her 70s Shot While Waiting at Orange County Bus Stop

Deputies searched the Azalea Park area after the Monday morning attack.

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A woman in her 70s was critically injured Monday after she was shot while waiting at a bus stop on Egan Drive in the Azalea Park area, sheriff’s officials said.

The shooting drew a large response from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office and left neighbors shaken in a residential area east of Orlando. Deputies had not announced an arrest by Monday evening, and investigators had not released a suspect description or motive.

Deputies responded shortly after 9 a.m. to the 1000 block of Egan Drive, near Hager Way, after reports of gunfire. They found the woman wounded at or near the bus stop and had her taken to a hospital in critical condition. Investigators later marked evidence at the scene, including bloodstains, bullet holes and a pair of sunglasses. Jill Bowles, who said she has lived in the neighborhood since 1984, said, “This hurts. This is very sad.”

Later Monday, SWAT deputies surrounded a home about a block from the shooting scene for several hours. Armored vehicles, robots and a drone were used as deputies tried to make contact with someone inside. By about 6 p.m., much of the law enforcement presence had cleared. Officials did not immediately say whether anyone was found inside the home or whether that response was tied to the bus stop shooting.

The sheriff’s office said the woman was shot by an unknown person. No arrests had been reported, and officials had not said whether the victim knew the shooter. Investigators also had not released the woman’s name, the number of shots fired or whether any weapon was recovered. The case remained active Monday night as deputies worked to identify the person responsible.

The shooting happened in broad daylight in a neighborhood where residents described families, children and people walking outside. Bowles said the violence was upsetting because the area is usually active and familiar. Deputies kept part of Egan Drive under investigation as they collected evidence and checked nearby locations for information that could help them track the gunman.

As of Monday night, the woman remained in critical condition, and the search for the shooter was continuing. The next update is expected from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office as investigators release more details.
