Woman dragged under water by gator, killed

LAKE KISSIMMEE, FL – A woman has died following a harrowing alligator attack on Lake Kissimmee, marking a tragic event that has left the community in shock. The attack happened near Tiger Creek’s mouth, with the woman and a male companion present during the incident.

Emergency teams, including the Polk County Sheriff’s Office and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), were dispatched swiftly. A helicopter from the Sheriff’s Office discovered the woman’s body in the lake, and FWC officers retrieved her remains, confirming her death shortly after.

As authorities withhold the identities of those involved, the investigation seeks to understand the circumstances of the attack. FWC officials are working with wildlife experts to analyze what might have led to the alligator’s behavior.

The medical examiner’s report will provide an official cause of death, but in the meantime, efforts are concentrated on locating the alligator responsible. Shots echoed in the vicinity as the search intensified.

Statewide nuisance alligator trappers have been called in by the FWC, drawing attention to a similar incident earlier this year involving a kayaker. The captured alligator will undergo examination for human remains or clothing, crucial for the investigation.

This tragic event underscores the need for caution in areas known for alligator activity. Authorities are emphasizing the importance of awareness and safety measures for those in and around Florida’s waters.

The investigation remains active as officials aim to ensure public safety and prevent future incidents.
