Woman dies after rear-end crash on I-45 North near Airtex

Deputies say her Honda was traveling on a flat tire when it was struck, triggering a rollover and multi-vehicle collision.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A woman was killed early Sunday when a Jeep rear-ended her Honda on the North Freeway near Airtex, causing the Jeep to overturn and the Honda to strike two other vehicles, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said. The crash happened around 2:30 a.m. in the southbound lanes.

Officials said the Honda had a flat tire and was moving along Interstate 45 when the collision happened. Investigators are reviewing statements that another vehicle abruptly changed lanes moments before impact. The Jeep’s driver, described by deputies as 18 years old, was not hurt. The other motorists involved remained at the scene as deputies shut down several lanes for hours to document the site and collect debris. The case is in its early stages, with crash reconstruction teams working to determine speeds, lane positions and lighting conditions before any charging decisions.

Deputies said preliminary witness accounts indicate traffic was light before the wreck. One driver reported a vehicle ahead of the Jeep swerved suddenly, after which the Jeep hit the Honda from behind. The impact flipped the Jeep onto its side, pushed the Honda forward and into two nearby cars, and scattered glass and metal across multiple lanes. Paramedics pronounced the Honda’s driver dead at the scene. Authorities did not publicly release her name pending notification of family. “It was a violent collision in the dark overnight hours,” Sgt. investigators said, noting they found no immediate signs of intoxication among the surviving drivers.

Crash investigators measured skid marks, mapped the final rest positions of the vehicles and examined the Honda’s damaged tire to confirm whether it blew out before or after the initial strike. Deputies photographed the Jeep Wrangler’s roof and pillars after the rollover and inspected its airbags. They also collected dash camera and traffic camera footage where available and asked passing motorists who witnessed the crash to contact the vehicular crimes unit. The Jeep’s driver and the other motorists provided statements at the scene, according to deputies. No arrests were reported by Sunday afternoon, and officials emphasized that charging decisions often follow technical analyses and a review by prosecutors.

The collision took place near the Airtex exit along a stretch of I-45 that carries heavy overnight trucking and airport traffic between The Woodlands and the North Belt. Multi-vehicle wrecks on the corridor often prompt lengthy closures while investigators reconstruct events and tow heavy SUVs. In recent weeks, deputies have responded to several serious crashes involving rollovers across unincorporated Harris County. While investigators did not immediately determine the speed of the vehicles in Sunday’s crash, they said the Jeep’s rollover was consistent with a high-energy rear impact and quick steering or braking inputs immediately after contact.

Under standard procedure, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office vehicular crimes unit will complete a crash reconstruction and forward its findings to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office for review. Detectives will analyze roadway friction, damage profiles and electronic data recorders, if recoverable, to establish speed, braking and steering inputs. The medical examiner will identify the victim and determine exact cause of death. If prosecutors believe criminal charges are warranted, any filings would be announced after the reconstruction and lab work are complete. Officials did not release a timetable but said updates typically arrive after next-of-kin notification and preliminary testing.

As daylight approached, tow crews righted the Jeep and cleared the scene while deputies reopened the southbound lanes in stages. Drivers moving through the area midmorning saw long skid marks and a damaged guardrail where the vehicles came to rest. A man who pulled over shortly after the crash said he saw the Jeep on its side and a compact car with heavy rear and side damage. “Everyone just stopped and tried to figure out what happened,” he said. Another motorist described debris “everywhere” and said traffic backed up toward FM 1960 until crews hauled away the last vehicle.

As of Sunday evening, investigators had not released the woman’s identity. No charges were filed as of that time. Deputies said they will provide new information after the medical examiner completes identification and the vehicular crimes unit submits its initial reconstruction report.
