Wake County deputies said a man was taken into custody after the shooting on Broken Arrow Court.
KNIGHTDALE, N.C. — A 43-year-old woman died after an overnight shooting near Knightdale, and deputies said Thursday that a man was in custody as investigators worked to determine what led to the gunfire.
Wake County sheriff’s deputies said they were called just after 12:30 a.m. Thursday to the 1200 block of Broken Arrow Court. There, they found Jessica Wells with an apparent gunshot wound. She was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died, according to authorities. Deputies did not immediately release the name of the man taken into custody or say what charges, if any, may follow.
The shooting unfolded in a neighborhood just outside Knightdale, where investigators spent the early morning hours securing the scene and gathering evidence. Authorities said only that deputies responded to a report of a shooting and found Wells injured when they arrived. The sheriff’s office did not say whether the suspect knew Wells, whether anyone else was hurt, or what may have happened in the moments before the gunfire. Officials also did not say whether deputies recovered a weapon at the scene.
By Thursday afternoon, the case had shifted from an assault investigation to a death investigation after Wells died from her injuries. The sheriff’s office identified her publicly as Jessica Wells, 43. That marked a significant update from the first reports, which described the victim only as an adult woman in critical condition. The agency said the investigation remained active and released no further narrative about the events leading up to the shooting.
Authorities have also not said whether witnesses were interviewed, whether 911 callers reported an argument or disturbance before shots were fired, or whether investigators believe there is any broader threat to the public. A man was taken into custody, but deputies have not described his relationship to Wells or outlined any formal legal steps beyond that detention. In North Carolina, investigators often wait to complete witness interviews and consult prosecutors before announcing charges in a homicide case.
The sheriff’s office has kept its public statements brief, focusing on the basic timeline, the location and the victim’s condition. That left major questions unanswered Thursday, including the motive, the number of shots fired and whether anyone else was present inside or near the home when deputies arrived. Even so, the custody of a suspect suggested investigators moved quickly after the call came in.
As of Thursday evening, deputies had identified Wells as the victim, confirmed her death and said the case remained under investigation. The next major step is expected to be a decision on charges and any additional public update from the Wake County Sheriff’s Office.
