Police say the 29-year-old was found shot in a hallway off East Troy Avenue shortly after sunrise Saturday.
INDIANAPOLIS — A 29-year-old woman died after she was shot early Saturday on the city’s south side, police said. Officers were called just after 6:45 a.m. to the 200 block of East Troy Avenue, near South Meridian Street, where they found the woman critically wounded inside a building.
Police said medics took the victim to a hospital in critical condition, where she later died. Homicide detectives are leading the investigation. The case drew a large response from patrol officers and crime scene technicians as they worked to secure the area and collect evidence. Investigators spent hours canvassing for surveillance video and interviewing people who were nearby at the time. The death marks another fatal shooting to start a December weekend in Indianapolis, and detectives are now working to determine what led up to the gunfire and whether the people involved knew each other.
Officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department’s Southeast District arrived within minutes of the 6:45 a.m. call, according to police. They located the woman in a hallway of a multi-unit building along East Troy Avenue with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds. “Detectives are in the early stages and are working to establish the facts,” an IMPD spokesperson said. Crime lab personnel documented the scene and marked shell casings before towing several cars for processing. The Marion County Coroner’s Office was notified to determine the exact cause and manner of death.
As of Wednesday, police had not announced arrests or released a detailed suspect description. Detectives asked nearby residents and businesses to check cameras for footage from roughly 6:15 to 7:15 a.m. Saturday. The block sits just east of South Meridian Street, a corridor with small businesses, apartments and older single-family homes. Neighbors reported waking to multiple bangs before squad cars and ambulances flooded the area. Officers taped off portions of the sidewalk and a small parking area while investigators moved door to door to identify witnesses.
The woman’s name and age were initially withheld pending notification of family, a standard step in Marion County death investigations. IMPD said the department’s victim assistance staff was working with relatives and offering updates about the next procedural steps. Detectives are reviewing prior calls for service in the surrounding blocks, looking for any recent disputes or disturbances that could be connected. Police did not immediately say how many shots were fired or what caliber weapon was used. The agency also did not immediately release whether a weapon was recovered at the scene.
Saturday’s shooting occurred in a busy residential pocket near the intersection of Troy Avenue and South Meridian Street, about 10 minutes south of downtown by car. The area has seen a mix of older homes and small commercial buildings, with narrow alleys and several multi-unit residences. Residents described a quiet morning before first responders arrived. One nearby worker said he pulled into a lot as officers were placing markers on the ground. “It was still dark and there were lights everywhere,” he said, recalling officers moving quickly to block traffic and redirect pedestrians as detectives began their work.
Detectives will continue to gather statements, review video and wait for the coroner’s findings to finalize the death ruling. If investigators identify a suspect, the case would be presented to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office for charging consideration. IMPD said updates would be released as verifiable information becomes available. As of Dec. 10, the investigation remained active, and police had not announced significant new developments.
