Mineral Point, Mo. — A woman is facing serious charges following the fatal shooting of her boyfriend inside their home. Josie Reed, 27, has been charged with first-degree murder, first-degree domestic assault, two counts of armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon, according to prosecutors in Washington County.
Reed remains in custody at the Washington County jail with her bond set at $1 million. The shooting occurred on Friday, and the victim, a 30-year-old man, has not yet been named publicly.
Details surrounding the incident have emerged through the deputy’s affidavit. Investigators reported that Reed’s statements were inconsistent when she spoke to them shortly after the shooting. Initially, she claimed that the victim had pepper-sprayed her and that he was reaching for a shotgun when she fired the fatal shots. However, during a subsequent interview, she alleged that he had physically assaulted her multiple times that day, including incidents where he choked her to unconsciousness.
Reed indicated that the victim had previously fired a weapon at her, prompting her to grab a gun from a nearby chair. She stated that she fired twice, believing she had missed the first shot. Despite Reed’s claims of being assaulted, deputies did not find any physical evidence to corroborate her account of being choked or pepper-sprayed. Moreover, investigators noted that a gunshot residue test conducted on the victim’s hand was inconsistent with someone who had discharged a firearm.
Following her initial court appearance on Tuesday, Reed’s next court date has yet to be determined. As the investigation continues, the community remains on edge, grappling with the repercussions of the tragic incident. Authorities have urged anyone with further information to come forward.
This case highlights ongoing concerns surrounding domestic violence and gun safety, sparking discussions on how to address these complex issues in communities across the nation.
