Los Angeles, Calif. — The widow of a physician slain in a targeted shooting last year has initiated legal action against his ex-wife, who is facing charges for allegedly plotting the murder. Ghazal Simorgh filed a wrongful death lawsuit that aims to secure potential assets she claims the ex-wife may have concealed or transferred.
The complaint, filed on July 21, includes Ahang Mirshojae, along with four other individuals, alleging intentional infliction of emotional distress, survival claims, and fraudulent asset transfers. Simorgh, accompanied by her 1-year-old daughter, asserts that her late husband’s ex-wife may be attempting to obscure financial resources ahead of the trial.
In a news conference, attorney Alex Guerrero emphasized the importance of safeguarding these assets, which are believed to be in jeopardy. “We also have strong reasons to suspect that there is ongoing movement of these assets,” added Arya Tahmassebi, another attorney representing Simorgh.
Dr. Hamid Mirshojae, 61, was shot and killed on August 23, 2024, while exiting Detox Woodland Hills, an addiction treatment facility he founded. The clinic, noted for assisting a range of patients, including celebrities, became the scene of a tragic ambush. A masked assailant approached Dr. Mirshojae as he was entering his vehicle, launching the attack before fleeing the scene.
Following an extensive investigation, police arrested Ahang Mirshojae on December 12, 2024, suspecting her of orchestrating the murder driven by motives of “revenge and jealousy.” Two other men, Evan Hardman and Sarallah Jawed, were also taken into custody and charged with murder, while a fourth individual, Ashley Rose Sweeting, has been charged as an accessory.
According to law enforcement, the investigation unveiled a conspiracy involving these five individuals to execute the plan that resulted in Dr. Mirshojae’s death.
At the press conference, Simorgh expressed her deep sorrow over the loss, highlighting the impact on her young daughter. “It’s not fair for my 1-year-old baby to lose her dad at a very young age,” she said, her emotions palpable as she recalled her husband.
All defendants have entered pleas of not guilty and are currently awaiting trial. Legal representatives for the accused have not provided comments on the lawsuit or ongoing proceedings.
As the case unfolds, the community continues to grapple with the shocking nature of the crime and its tragic aftermath for the Mirshojae family.
