KEENESBURG, CO – A tragedy has struck the close-knit community of Keenesburg as residents mourn the loss of six individuals found dead at Prospect Ranch dairy, located just east of the town. Among the deceased was a student from Highland High School, deeply affecting both the school and the broader community.
The incident unfolded when Southeast Wildfire responded to a call for a confined space rescue. The Weld County coroner’s office is currently investigating the possibility of gas exposure as a cause, specifically looking into hydrogen sulfide, a hazardous gas that can be emitted from decomposing manure.
Residents of the small town, which has a population of around 2,000, are grappling with the news. Tara Dreiling, who heard sirens while finishing work, immediately reached out to others, concerned for their safety. “I started contacting a few people to see if everyone was okay,” she said.
Aaron Lam, the mayor of Keenesburg, expressed the collective grief felt by the community. “In a town like ours, any loss is deeply felt by all,” he stated. Lam, who also works as a workman’s compensation nurse case manager, highlighted the emotional and professional impact of such workplace tragedies.
The community’s response has been swift, with locals coming together to support one another. “We’re a small town that’s very close-knit,” Dreiling added, emphasizing the unity and resilience of Keenesburg’s residents.
The Weld County Sheriff’s office has confirmed that the incident is not being treated as a criminal case. However, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is conducting an investigation to determine if any safety standards were violated.
As the investigation continues, the town remains in a state of mourning, reflecting on the lives lost and the impact on the community. The tragedy has left an indelible mark on Keenesburg, with residents vowing to support each other through this difficult time.
The school district has also been affected, with the loss of a student resonating throughout the educational community. Efforts are underway to provide counseling and support to those impacted.
As Keenesburg navigates this challenging period, the spirit of solidarity remains strong, offering a sense of hope amid the sorrow.
