CHUADANGA, Bangladesh — A dispute over the quality of a white-fleshed watermelon escalated into a violent confrontation Friday night, resulting in two people being seriously injured. The incident occurred in the Lohapatti area of Chuadanga, a town known for its bustling markets.
Local residents Rubel Islam, 35, and Amirul Islam, 27, sustained injuries after being attacked by a mob of 20 to 30 individuals. These attackers were purportedly associates of a watermelon vendor involved in the initial disagreement. According to police, the dispute began at Boro Bazar, a popular local market, when a customer sought to return a purchased watermelon.
The conflict over the watermelon’s return led to mounting tensions, which later culminated in Rubel and Amirul being ambushed and stabbed while riding on a motorbike. The assault indicates a shocking escalation from a simple market dispute to violent retribution.
Following the attack, both victims were rushed to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital around 10:45 pm. Due to the critical nature of his injuries, Amirul was subsequently transferred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
Local law enforcement acted swiftly to stabilize the situation and are currently investigating the violent episode. Officer-in-charge Khaledur Rahman of Sadar Police Station emphasized that efforts are in full swing to identify and apprehend those responsible for the assault.
