WASHINGTON, Utah — A 28-year-old has been hit with 11 felony charges after being accused of the fatal shootings of her parents at their home in Washington County. Identified as Mia Bailey, she faces serious accusations including two counts of aggravated murder.
On Friday, authorities in the 5th District Court pressed charges, clarifying that although Bailey faces accusations that can carry the death penalty, prosecutors will not seek it. Instead, if convicted, she faces at least 25 years to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The court documents revealed a decision by the state, indicating, “The state hereby submits this notice of its intent to not seek the death penalty.”
BaSpriteley, who had legally changed her name and gender last year, is also charged with numerous other offenses. These include attempted aggravated murder, aggravated burglary, six counts of discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury — all first-degree felonies — plus an additional count of firearm discharge classed as a third-degree felony.
The incident, which disrupted the small community in Washington County, occurred when Bailey entered the home at 1039 E. Chinook Drive uninvited and began shooting. What escalated the gravity of the situation was Bailey’s alleged confession to police, where she expressed no remorse and indicated a deliberate intent to kill her parents.
According to police records, after shooting her parents, Bailey fired through a closed door at her brother who had barricaded himself inside a room, narrowly escaping physical harm. In the subsequent police affidavit, Bailey was described as having troubled relationships with various family members, several of whom expressed fear of her.
The situation led to an intense overnight manhunt, with police labeling Bailey “armed and dangerous.” Residents were urged to stay indoors and secure their homes until Bailey’s apprehension on Wednesday around 10:30 a.m., following a police operation near 2800 East and 1000 South.
Following her arrest, Bailey shed more light on the apparently volatile family dynamics. Neighbors too hinted at ongoing tensions within the household, mentioning past experiences of “volatility and bad vibes.” This tragic case not only highlights a devastating family ordeal but also raises deeper questions about the underlying interpersonal conflicts that precipitated such violence.
