Wareham, Mass. — A 50-year-old man appeared in court Thursday facing serious charges linked to an explosion at his residence. Mark Halpin has been charged with possessing explosives and the unauthorized handling or placement of such materials, according to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s office.
Following his arraignment, Halpin was ordered to remain in custody on a cash bail of $10,000. If he manages to post bail, he will be required to wear a GPS monitor, stay confined to his home, and abstain from possessing any weapons or incendiary devices. Prosecutors had initially requested Halpin be held without bail and later sought to increase the bail amount to $75,000.
The incident that led to these charges occurred on Oct. 3, when authorities responded to a report of an explosion at Halpin’s home on Aunt Maryville Lane. Upon arrival, first responders found Halpin in distress, exhibiting signs of severe injuries, including burns to his upper body and cuts to his hands. Evidence at the scene indicated significant damage consistent with an explosion, including shattered windows, warped appliances, and scattered debris throughout the property.
During a subsequent search of the residence, law enforcement discovered various materials associated with the creation of explosives, including calcium fluoride, compressed air tanks, and ammonium nitrate, along with several powders and chemicals. This assortment raised concerns about the potential for dangerous activities occurring at the location.
Halpin was arrested at the scene and has been held in custody since, with an initial bail set at $15,000. He is expected to make another court appearance on Nov. 3, as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the explosion and the presence of hazardous materials in his home.
