The altercation began with a verbal dispute between two men at a nearby construction site around midday. According to Superintendent Manus Walsh of the WA Police, the conflict escalated rapidly when the victim attempted to flee the area. He was pursued by the assailant driving a silver Mazda utility vehicle.
“The situation quickly turned violent when the victim was apparently hit by the vehicle,” Superintendent Walsh explained. “A secondary assault occurred shortly after, where the victim was attacked with a hammer.”
Authorities are still piecing together the details of the incident but have emphasized the gravity of the attack and the critical condition in which the victim was left. If not for the timely intervention of an off-duty doctor who happened to be at the scene, the outcome could have been fatal. The doctor provided immediate first aid, applying a tourniquet to the victim’s leg, effectively saving his life.
“We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to the off-duty doctor whose quick thinking and medical skills prevented a likely on-site fatality,” Walsh remarked, acknowledging the crucial role played by the doctor in this critical incident.
Following the attack, the victim was transported urgently to Royal Perth Hospital where he is expected to undergo extensive surgery. The hospital has not released a statement regarding his current condition.
In response to the incident, the highway was completely shut down in both directions, causing significant traffic disruption. Motorists were advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes as law enforcement and emergency services managed the scene.
