Violent Attack on DPWH Engineers in Iloilo City Could Be Case of Mistaken Identity, Say Police

ILOILO CITY, Philippines – Authorities in Iloilo City are investigating a violent attack on B. Aquino Ave., also known as Diversion Road, to determine if it was a case of road rage or a case of mistaken identity. The victims, who are engineers from the Department of Public Works and Highways, claimed to have no known enemies, leading police to consider other angles behind the incident.

The attack, which took place on the evening of Jan. 8, was caught on camera and showed a scooter rider repeatedly striking a government-issued Mitsubishi pick-up with a piece of wood. The driver and passengers, all DPWH engineers, claimed they did not see the assailant coming as the attack was sudden. The incident raised concerns, prompting the local mayor to offer a cash reward for anyone who can identify and lead to the arrest of the perpetrator.

Police Captain Val Cambel mentioned that one of the victims offered a possible angle behind the attack, but did not provide further details. As further investigation indicated that the weapon used might have been a piece of wood, the authorities are now considering the case as a potential case of mistaken identity rather than road rage. The injured driver sustained a hematoma on his arm from the attack.

Mayor Jerry TreƱas condemned the violence and stated that such behavior will not be tolerated in the “City of Love.” He announced a cash reward for any information leading to the arrest of the perpetrator. The assailant fled the scene of the crime before the police arrived, leaving the injured driver to be taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention.

Authorities are urging witnesses and the public to come forward with any information that could aid in the investigation and apprehension of the suspect. The incident has raised concerns about safety and security on the city’s roads, prompting a call for stronger measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

The attack, caught on camera, has raised questions about the safety of motorists and the need for heightened security measures in the area. The police are investigating the incident and urging anyone with information to come forward to assist in the apprehension of the suspect who perpetrated the violent attack along Diversion Road.
