Awo, Nigeria – Armed assailants launched a violent attack on operatives of the Osun State Security Network Agency, also known as Amotekun Corps, at their command post in Awo, located in the Egbedore local government area. The incident, which occurred on Friday, has raised serious concerns about public safety and law enforcement efforts in the region.
In a statement released on Monday, Amotekun Corps Commander Isaac Omoyele detailed the circumstances leading up to the unprovoked assault. He explained that the attack stemmed from a report by Oba Adebusoye Oyebamiji, the Oniwoye of Iwoye, regarding the unauthorized burial of a corpse on land deemed sacred to the community. Responding to this request, a team of four Amotekun operatives was dispatched to investigate.
Upon arriving at the burial site, the officers learned that the interment had already been conducted. In a sudden turn of events, Ismaila Aluko, a notorious figure long sought by authorities, along with a group of armed accomplices, launched a fierce attack on the operatives, injuring them during the confrontation. The operatives were forced to retreat to the command post for assistance.
However, the situation escalated with a second attack on the Amotekun office shortly after. Omoyele lamented that the assault took place in the presence of law enforcement officials, including personnel from the Nigeria Police and the Department of State Services, along with family members of the aggressors. The attackers attempted to disarm the operatives, resulting in several operatives sustaining serious injuries.
“The aggressors’ actions are a blatant challenge to the authority and safety of our communities,” Omoyele stated. “We will not tolerate such violence and will ensure that all parties involved are swiftly arrested and brought to justice.”
The commander emphasized the vital role that Amotekun plays in maintaining peace and security in Osun State. He reiterated the agency’s commitment to protecting lives and property, stating that they would continue their mission to uphold law and order throughout the region.
“Violent disruptions to our communities will face immediate consequences,” he asserted. “Our operations will not waver in the face of such threats.”
The response from local authorities and the Amotekun Corps reflects a growing concern about security in the area and the need for cooperative law enforcement efforts to combat crime and violence.
