Koppal, India – Tensions flared in the district of Koppal on Friday when a group of illegal sand miners assaulted government officials during a raid. The violent encounter ensued at a clandestine sand mining operation near Chikkasindogi village in the Hirehalla area.
Three officers from the Department of Mines and Geology, including Sachin Gauripur, had arrived at the site to curb the unauthorized extraction and transport of sand. Their efforts to enforce the law ignited the conflict, particularly after they stopped a tractor loaded with sand and demanded the unloading of the illicit cargo.
The situation escalated rapidly when the miners, numbering eight, attacked Gauripur and his colleagues in a blatant display of defiance. Gauripur sustained injuries during the altercation and was subsequently rushed to the district hospital for medical attention.
Illegal sand mining has been a persistent issue in Koppal, often occurring under the protection of some local influential figures and authorities. Ishappa Madinur, a prominent local figure who has opposed such illegal activities, remarked on the increasing frequency of violent incidents related to sand mining in the region. In response to the assault, senior geologist Rasheed from the Department of Mines and Geology took immediate action, filing a complaint at the Alawandi police station. The move aimed to bring the assailants to justice and signal a tough stance against the rampant illegal mining activities.

Sources within the department disclosed a reluctance among law enforcement to proceed with the investigation, allegedly due to the perpetrators’ connections to an influential individual who also has ties to a local politician.
