Video released of fatal shooting involving sword-wielding man in Pima County

Tucson, Arizona – Authorities have released video footage depicting the fatal shooting of a sword-carrying man in Pima County. The Pima County Regional Incident Team unveiled the video nearly a month after the incident occurred on Saturday, February 24.

The video includes disturbing content and reveals the events leading up to the death of 23-year-old Devon Lewis at a hotel on South Palo Verde Road. Responding to a 911 call reporting Lewis yelling and brandishing a sword in the parking lot, deputies from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department encountered Lewis outside with the sword sheathed.

After a brief exchange with deputies, Lewis unsheathed the sword and advanced towards them, prompting a deputy to fire a fatal shot. Despite the deputies’ efforts to provide aid, Lewis did not survive. The incident did not result in any additional injuries.

The deputy responsible for the shooting, identified as one-year veteran Ramon Morales, will be subject to investigation by the Pima County Sheriff’s Department to determine compliance with departmental policies. Parallelly, the Pima County Regional Incident Team, in collaboration with the Tucson Police Department, is conducting an independent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
