SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Utah has recorded the lowest number of traffic-related deaths since 2019, a positive development amid ongoing concerns about road safety. Preliminary figures shared by state transportation and public safety officials indicate that 264 people lost their lives on Utah roads in 2025. This marks a decrease from 277 fatalities in the previous year and is a significant drop from the 248 deaths logged four years ago.
Shaunna Burbidge, the program manager for Utah’s Zero Fatalities initiative, emphasized the importance of every single life lost on the road. “While it’s encouraging to see a decline in fatalities, we must remember that even one death is one too many. These statistics help us identify ongoing risks and reinforce that responsible choices while driving can save lives,” she said.
Despite the overall downward trend, certain demographics have seen troubling increases. The percentage of motorcyclist deaths rose sharply, climbing 32% from the previous year. Additionally, fatal accidents involving teenage drivers surged, with the toll rising from 18 deaths in 2024 to 31 in 2025. This stark increase underscores the heightened vulnerability of both young drivers and motorcyclists.
The Department of Public Safety attributes many incidents among young drivers to distractions and risky behaviors, combined with a lack of experience, which can lead to dire consequences. “Every time we get behind the wheel, our decisions have lasting impacts not just for ourselves, but for everyone sharing the road,” said Sgt. Mike Alexander of the Utah Highway Patrol. “These tragedies can be avoided. By committing to drive with focus, accountability, and ensuring everyone in the vehicle is wearing their seatbelt, we are not only adhering to laws but actively contributing to safer roads.”
