Singapore — Commuters in Singapore need to plan for major disruptions scheduled from December 7-10, as train services on the East-West Line (EWL) between Tanah Merah and Tampines stations will be halted to enable critical infrastructure work. The shutdown is part of a broader effort to integrate the existing railway line with the new East Coast Integrated Depot (ECID), slated to open in 2016.
During this period, authorities are setting up alternate transportation options to mitigate the inconvenience to passengers. Shuttle trains will be functioning to bridge the gap between key sections of the disrupted route. Specifically, travelers can expect shuttle services between Tampines and Pasir Ris every five minutes, Tanah Merah and Expo every eight minutes, and between Expo and Changi Airport every 11 minutes.
To further support commuting needs, particularly during the peak hours of December 9-10, alternate trains bound for Tanah Merah will conclude their journeys at Paya Lebar station. This measure aims to maintain regular service frequency during high-demand periods. Commuters are encouraged to stay updated on these changes through platform display panels which will indicate the last station of each train journey.
Adding to the logistical changes, a dedicated shuttle bus service will be operational to connect Tampines, Simei, and Tanah Merah stations. Known as Shuttle 7, this service will maintain a frequency of three to five minutes from the start of daily train service until the end, ensuring connectivity for travelers moving between these points.
As infrastructure upgrades can often be a source of confusion, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and SMRT have gone to considerable lengths to keep the public informed. Detailed information on the disruptions, including timings and alternate services, is being shared through various communication channels.
Passengers are also advised to leverage technology to stay informed. The MyTransport.SG mobile app, alongside updates from LTA and SMRT’s social media platforms, will provide real-time updates on transportation adjustments throughout the duration of the works.
This integration of current tracks with the ECID is a critical step in enhancing the robustness and capacity of Singapore’s rail infrastructure. Once complete, the new depot will serve as a pivotal hub for rail maintenance and operations, streamlining services and increasing operational efficiency.
