HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — A random act of violence left a 68-year-old man hospitalized after he was struck in the head while walking to his dentist appointment. Oscar Perez expressed disbelief over being targeted in such an unprovoked attack, which took place last week as he prepared to drive away from a plaza on Taft Street.
Perez was with his brother in their work truck when they encountered a driver who honked at them. Initially, Perez approached the situation calmly, asking the driver to be mindful of his need to travel slowly due to an upcoming appointment. The driver, distracted by a phone call, apologized, and the interaction appeared to conclude amiably.
However, Perez suspects that the honking was a prelude to a more sinister plan. He believes the driver may have been coordinating with another individual, who approached him and struck him unexpectedly. The force of the blow knocked him unconscious, but his brother’s sudden presence scared off the assailants, prompting them to flee the scene.
In reflecting on the incident, Perez speculated that the assailants might have been attempting to rob him, suggesting they had their eyes on the tools and equipment in his truck. Despite the trauma and physical injuries he sustained, which included bruises and hairline fractures, Perez returned to work shortly after the attack.
“I don’t know why they targeted me,” he said, displaying visible injuries from the incident. “What I do know is that they wanted my tools, and that’s not right.” He is now determined to share his experience to warn others and prevent similar events from occurring.
Hollywood Police are currently investigating the assault, and Perez believes that individuals who engage in such reckless behavior need to face serious consequences. “It’s not fair for someone to live in fear because there are people out there who don’t care,” he said.
As he continues to recover, Perez remains hopeful for accountability in his case, urging authorities to take action against those who perpetuate violence in the community. His resolve to speak out serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of violence and the importance of vigilance in public spaces.
