University Hospital of the West Indies Responds Strongly to Nurse’s Assault, Calls for Justice and Zero Tolerance for Violence

Kingston, Jamaica — The University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) has strongly condemned a violent attack on one of its nurses, following the release of a disturbing video capturing the incident.

The hospital’s leadership emphasized the importance of employee safety and dignity, stating that “no one should have to endure violence or intimidation while performing their duties.” They also expressed support for the affected nurse, affirming their commitment to ensure her well-being during this difficult time.

The assault took place on a main road in Mount Friendship, St Andrew, on Tuesday night. In the video, a businessman allegedly engages in a violent confrontation with a female motorist while brandishing a firearm, in what appears to be an act of road rage. Authorities reported that the suspect is currently in custody, pending formal charges.

Acting Superintendent Randy Sweeney, the Divisional Commander for the St Andrew North Police Division, indicated that the suspect is scheduled for questioning. He assured the public that the investigation is being handled with thoroughness and sensitivity, highlighting the emotional weight of the situation.

“We are committed to uncovering the facts, and appropriate measures will be taken against the accused as the investigation progresses,” Sweeney stated.

The incident has drawn widespread outrage, including from Dr. Alfred Dawes, the Opposition Spokesman on Health and Wellness. In a recent statement, he described the attack as a stark reminder of increasing lawlessness that jeopardizes public safety. “This was not merely an act of aggression; it was an example of savagery that could have had fatal consequences. We must urgently address and combat this culture of violence,” Dawes asserted.

Community members have expressed their shock and dismay over the incident, calling for stronger measures to protect healthcare workers and the public. The UHWI, along with health advocates, is committed to fostering a safe environment for all employees amid growing concerns about violence in society.

As the investigation unfolds, many are hoping for swift justice in a case that underscores significant issues surrounding safety and respect within the community.
