BEIRUT, LEBANON – An investigation is underway by the United Nations following an explosion that resulted in injuries to three personnel and a translator in southern Lebanon over the weekend.
The incident occurred during a foot patrol along the Blue Line, a U.N.-designated boundary between Lebanon and Israel, where three military observers from the Observer Group Lebanon (OGL) and a Lebanese language assistant were wounded by the explosion. They were promptly evacuated for medical treatment as the cause of the explosion is being looked into by U.N. officials.
The injured personnel were part of the Observer Group Lebanon (OGL), which operates under the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) in the Middle East. UNTSO military observers play a crucial role in monitoring ceasefires, supervising armistice agreements, preventing conflicts from escalating, and supporting other peacekeeping operations in the region.
Following the incident, Andrea Tenenti, a spokesperson for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety and security of all U.N. personnel in the region. He highlighted the responsibility of all actors to protect non-combatants, including peacekeepers, journalists, medical personnel, and civilians, under international humanitarian law.
This explosion comes in the midst of escalating violence along the Blue Line, prompting UNIFIL to issue a statement urging for an immediate ceasefire to halt the surge of violence that has resulted in civilian casualties and widespread destruction in the area. The call for de-escalation and the pursuit of sustainable political and diplomatic solutions were reiterated by UNIFIL in light of the recent violence.
The United Nations remains committed to its peacekeeping mission in Lebanon and will continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the explosion, ensuring the safety and security of its personnel while calling for a peaceful resolution to the conflict along the Blue Line.
