Kyiv, Ukraine – Ukrainian officials confirmed a drone attack on a Russian oil depot located in the Kursk region, an area bordering northeastern Ukraine, as part of its ongoing efforts to disrupt Russian logistical capabilities amid escalating conflicts. The incident, which took place overnight, targeted the Polyova oil depot, marking the second strike on this facility since mid-February.
The General Staff of Ukraine revealed that the operation involved the usage of long-range drones, a tactic increasingly deployed by Kyiv to damage infrastructure critical to Russia’s war effort. This strategic focus aims to diminish Moscow’s oil exports and thereby constrain the resources available for its military activities.
The Kursk Regional Governor, Alexey Smirnov, reported that the attack led to fires in three fuel storage tanks. However, there were no casualties as a result of the confrontation. Smirnov also noted that resident air defenses shot down two drones, one of which caused a fire in a civilian property in Medvenka, south of Kursk.
Further complicating matters, an explosive device dropped from what was described as a Ukrainian drone hit a residential building in Sudzha, injuring one person. This adds to the growing concerns about the broader implications and human cost of the ongoing war.
The utilization of drone strikes also extends beyond Kursk. According to Russia’s Defense Ministry, air defenses intercepted and neutralized more drones in the neighboring Belgorod region and as far east as Nizhny Novgorod. These developments suggest a significant intensification of Ukraine’s aerial assault tactics.
The attacked depot reportedly played a significant role in supporting Russian military logistics, housing 11 storage tanks with a combined capacity of approximately 7,000 cubic meters. Ukrainian military sources indicated that the strikes may have also impaired a nearby power substation, although details remain unconfirmed.
