Opelousas, Louisiana — A mother’s grief lingers as she remembers her son, who was a victim of gun violence more than a decade ago. Lora Harrison gathered with family and friends Saturday on Planters Street to commemorate Eric Harrison, a young man whose life was cut short by senseless violence. For Lora, every day serves as a painful reminder of her loss and the void left in her life.
Since that tragic day, Lora has found it difficult to cope, expressing that the anguish of losing her son feels as vivid now as it did 12 years ago. “When he was taken from me, a part of me was taken too,” Lora reflected. She emphasized that grief does not dissipate with time. “It’s not something you can simply put behind you. This pain is with me every single day,” she said.
Those who knew Eric remember him as a compassionate individual, always willing to lend a hand. “He had a genuine heart for everyone he met,” Lora noted. Misty Lastie, a close friend, shared similar sentiments: “Eric had a truly good spirit. He was the kind of person who would do anything to help others.”
In the years following Eric’s death, Lora has embraced a new role. She is now raising her grandson, the son of her late child, who tragically never got the chance to know his father. This new chapter has inspired Lora to transform her grief into action, leading her to establish a nonprofit organization called Mothers With Broken Hearts. The initiative aims to provide support for women grieving the loss of children due to gun violence.
“Our mission is to share our stories and lean on each other during this unimaginable pain,” she explained. “It’s important for us to find ways to heal together and help one another.” Lora hopes that her organization will foster a community of support for those affected by similar tragedies.
During Saturday’s memorial, Lora delivered a heartfelt plea to the community. “We must put the guns down,” she urged. “It’s time to start forgiving one another. Violence is not the answer.” Her message resonates deeply, highlighting the need for a shift in the community’s approach to conflict and healing.
Lora plans to launch her nonprofit soon, with the aim of raising awareness about gun violence and its consequences. As she honors Eric’s memory, her resolve grows stronger, serving as a beacon of hope for others who share her pain.
