The deaths of two teenage passengers became Jacksonville’s latest traffic fatalities as investigators examined a chain-reaction collision.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The deaths of two teenage boys in a three-vehicle crash on Edgewood Avenue West raised Duval County’s traffic fatality count to 107 for the year, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
The boys were passengers in a Toyota Camry that was struck from behind near Lem Turner Road at about 11:15 a.m. Saturday, July 25. Police said a Dodge 3500 pickup towing a large trailer loaded with two vehicles hit the Camry and pushed it into a Ford Ranger pickup.
The force of the collision sent the Ford through the intersection, investigators said. The Dodge continued forward and came to rest on top of the Camry, trapping its driver and leaving the teenage passengers dead inside.
Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department crews removed the Camry’s 28-year-old driver from the wreckage. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Police said the Ford driver also was hospitalized and was in stable condition.
Authorities had not publicly identified the two teenagers as of Thursday. Officials also had not disclosed their exact ages or their relationship to the Camry’s driver.
The driver of the Dodge was described as a man in his 50s. Sgt. Robert Hungerford of the Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit said he remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
The crash remained under investigation, with detectives examining the vehicles’ speeds, the Dodge driver’s braking and whether distraction contributed to the collision. Police noted that the Dodge was traveling downhill while pulling the loaded trailer.
No citations or charges had been announced. Investigators also had not released findings about mechanical problems, road conditions or the trailer’s weight, leaving several factors unresolved.
The two deaths were the 106th and 107th traffic fatalities recorded in Duval County during 2026, police said. Authorities had not provided an updated countywide total or additional information about the hospitalized drivers by Thursday.
