The incident occurred on April 4, 2017, when Patton was performing welding operations on a 30-foot tank. Unexpectedly, the structure exploded, leaving him with life-threatening injuries. Among the first to respond was then Lieutenant Scott Powell of Hamilton County EMS, who swiftly coordinated the critical medical response efforts required on the scene.
Patton was initially taken to a local medical center, Erlanger, and due to the severity of his condition, he was subsequently airlifted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The medical professionals there would contend with Patton’s extensive injuries, which included third-degree burns over 65% of his body, multiple fractures, internal injuries, and a severe head trauma. Despite a prognosis that suggested his survival was unlikely, Patton’s resilience proved extraordinary.
During his medical journey, Patton faced a grueling 72 days in the Burn Intensive Care Unit followed by a six-week-long rehabilitation period. His treatment also included multiple surgeries addressing his various injuries, one of which was a hip replacement.
Throughout Patton’s recovery, the connection between him and Powell did not wane. Jessica Patton, Gary’s wife, facilitated ongoing communication with Powell via social media. Their first in-person meeting occurred two years after the accident, marking a milestone in both their lives.
Recently, Patton, who now resides in upstate New York due to ongoing medical needs, returned to the South for a visit, during which he and Powell had an opportunity to reunite once more. This meeting served not just as a personal reunion but also as a powerful reminder of the significant impact first responders have on the lives of those they assist.
