Ohio City, Ohio — A tragic sequence unfolded in Ohio City on Sunday morning as authorities investigated the deaths of three individuals, including an apparent double homicide followed by a suicide, according to Van Wert County Sheriff Thomas M. Riggenbach.
The investigation commenced when a concerned individual contacted law enforcement shortly after 8 a.m., reporting that a friend, Paul A. Boldman, 51, had confessed to murdering his girlfriend and another man before threatening to take his own life. Sheriff’s deputies were immediately dispatched to gather further details and verify the claims.
Following leads, law enforcement went to a residence on Washington Street. Upon entering the home, they discovered two victims, Shelby M. Coats, 29, and Andrew C. Lause, 30, both deceased with gunshot wounds. The scene was quickly secured, and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation was called to assist with forensic analysis.
While conducting a parallel inquiry, deputies traced a vehicle registered to Boldman to another home on Washington Street. Establishing a perimeter, they awaited a search warrant, which, upon issuance, allowed the Van Wert Police Department’s Special Response Team to enter the property with backup from the sheriff’s deputies.
Inside, they found Boldman, alive but suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot injury. He was swiftly attended to by officers and EMS personnel staged nearby, and was rushed to OhioHealth Van Wert Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
