SMITHVILLE, Tenn. — Three individuals have been arrested in Warren County following an expansive investigation into the grim discovery of three bodies at a rural residence early Wednesday morning. Authorities initiated the probe after deputies were called to a home on Merry Oaks Road shortly before 9 a.m. to investigate a report of a deceased man, where two additional bodies were subsequently found in an adjacent outbuilding.
The subsequent investigation, a collaborative effort involving the Warren County Sheriff’s Office, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the Tennessee Office of Homeland Security, and the District Attorney General’s Office, spanned multiple counties. During the course of the investigation, stolen items from the Merry Oaks Road property surfaced in both Nashville and Memphis, aiding detectives in identifying the suspects.
On Thursday, following a crucial tip-off, the suspects—Jessica Root, Hannah Rose, and Caleb Brookins—were traced to the Bell Street Apartments in neighboring DeKalb County. Root, a former resident of the apartments with existing family links there, was taken into custody without incident after a search warrant was executed. The apprehension operation took a dramatic turn when Rose, driving a vehicle with Brookins as a passenger, rammed a vehicle and injured a Homeland Security agent in an attempted escape.
The sequence of events escalated when District Attorney General Chris Stanford reportedly opened fire at the fleeing vehicle. Although the shooting resulted in no injuries, the Homeland Security agent sustained a leg injury. Following the chaos, while Rose was quickly arrested, Brookins fled on foot. Local law enforcement issued a warning to the public, deeming him “armed and dangerous,” prompting area schools to initiate lockdowns amidst the search.
Brookins was eventually captured unarmed by TBI agents a short distance away from the site of the confrontation. This intense manhunt concluded without further violence, and the lockdowns at the local schools were lifted, allowing worried parents to reunite with their children.
Charges have been laid in the wake of these arrests: Root and Brookins face three counts of criminal homicide, and are currently detained at the Warren County Jail. Rose faces charges of evading arrest and aggravated assault stemming from her clash with the Homeland Security agent and is being held in DeKalb County.
