Tributes Pour In as Inquest Begins for Nirodha Niwunhella, 32, Found Dead in Cardiff Amid Murder Charges

Cardiff, Wales — An inquest has commenced regarding the tragic death of Nirodha Niwunhella, a 32-year-old woman found deceased on August 21. Authorities declared her dead at the scene after responding to emergency reports from a member of the public regarding a seriously injured individual.

Niwunhella was discovered between two parked cars in South Morgan Place, where she had sustained multiple sharp-force injuries. Paramedics pronounced her dead shortly after their arrival at approximately 7:50 a.m. during an investigation initiated by local authorities.

During a hearing at Pontypridd Coroners’ Court, area coroner Patricia Morgan indicated that there is substantial reason to suspect that the circumstances surrounding Niwunhella’s death were violent or unnatural. Her identification was confirmed by a close friend, and a post-mortem examination conducted at the University Hospital of Wales identified the cause of death as multiple sharp-force injuries.

This tragic incident has prompted the arrest of 37-year-old Thisara Weragalage, a resident of Pentwyn, who has since been charged with murder. He appeared in Cardiff Magistrates’ Court over the weekend before being transferred to Cardiff Crown Court on August 26. No plea was entered at that time. Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke scheduled a plea and trial preparation hearing for September 19, with a trial anticipated to take place over two weeks starting February 9 of the following year. Weragalage has been remanded into custody pending further legal proceedings.

Following the news of Niwunhella’s death, her family paid tribute to her memory, noting that she was cherished by many as a beloved daughter, family member, and friend. They expressed their sorrow, highlighting her significant impact through kindness and warmth, and reflected on how her spirit will continue to inspire those who knew her. “Though her life ended too soon, the love she shared will always remain with us,” her family stated in a heartfelt message.

Senior Investigating Officer DCI Matthew Davies of South Wales Police extended his condolences to Niwunhella’s family and friends. He emphasized the ongoing investigation and encouraged anyone with information to come forward, reminding the community that specially trained officers are available to support those affected by this tragic incident.

As the inquest progresses, the community mourns the loss of a woman whose life was characterized by compassion and warmth, and who left a lasting impression on those she encountered.
