Temperance, Mich. – Authorities are investigating a tragic incident in Bedford Township involving the deaths of two individuals found with gunshot wounds in a home last week. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office has classified the event as a murder-suicide, revealing that a 17-year-old high school student was allegedly shot by her bowling coach.
On June 14, law enforcement responded to a report of the fatalities at a residence on W. Sterns Road. The victim was identified as Gwendolyn Faye Smith, a student at Bedford Schools. Ryan Jacob Leist, 33, was named as the shooter, who reportedly entered Smith’s home before turning the weapon on himself after the violent act.
Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough stated that Smith’s stepfather discovered the two in the home, both suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. The sheriff confirmed that Smith and Leist were acquainted through the local bowling team, where she competed and he coached at Forest Lanes. Although Leist was not formally paid by the school district, he served in an unpaid capacity through the bowling establishment.
As investigators continue to look into the backgrounds of both individuals, Sheriff Goodnough noted that it remains unclear what motivated the incident or how the two were connected, beyond their involvement in the bowling community. He mentioned that recent communications between them are being examined, but there is currently no evidence of a romantic relationship. Additionally, Leist had recently resigned from his coaching position, although the reasons for that decision have not been disclosed.
The occurrence has sent shockwaves throughout the community, which is known for its rural atmosphere and close-knit relationships. “It’s been tragic,” Goodnough said, visibly emotional. “This has had a significant impact on our community. With around 155,000 residents, we’re a farming community where everyone knows each other.”
In response to the incident, the Temperance Bedford School District activated its crisis team to support students and staff affected by the tragedy. The sheriff’s office had taken calls just days earlier regarding another shooting incident that involved two teenagers from a nearby community school.
As the investigation unfolds, the community is left to grapple with the profound loss and the circumstances surrounding this devastating event. Residents are reminded of the importance of mental health resources, and those in distress are encouraged to seek support through available hotlines and services.
