New York City – An 18-year-old fugitive was captured by federal and local authorities Thursday, just days after a tragic shooting left a 69-year-old grandmother dead. The incident, which occurred in broad daylight, involved a stray bullet that struck Robin Wright as she walked with a friend on August 27.
Wright was hit in the face by a bullet that investigators believe was fired during a failed robbery attempt nearby. The shooting occurred around 12:25 p.m. at East 110th Street and Madison Avenue, where Wright was simply trying to enjoy a lunch outing while rehabilitating from a recent leg surgery.
Detailing the harrowing moment, her friend, Juanita Arnold, recounted watching in despair as Wright collapsed. “I just stood there and watched my friend while she died,” Arnold said, expressing her frustration over the senselessness of the violence. “This was not necessary. That lady should’ve never died like that.”
Wright was using a walker to assist her recovery when she was fatally injured. Arnold, who accompanied her on the walk, said Wright was looking forward to spending time with her grandson and was determined to regain her strength. “She wanted some exercise. We were just going to get lunch, and she never made it back,” Arnold added.
Witnesses described the chaotic scene following the gunfire. Sonya Hampton, a neighbor, was nearby when she heard shots. “I was just coming from the store and heard the gunshots. I turned around to see where they hit, and she was on the floor,” Hampton recalled, noting that Wright’s walker was left behind after she fell.
Law enforcement sources indicated that the shooting was part of a larger pattern of gun violence stemming from a botched robbery. The suspects allegedly attempted to rob another individual just a block away, leading to a series of exchanges in gunfire. In the aftermath, while one shooter remains at large, the teen suspect was apprehended by the NYPD’s Violent Gang Task Force, with the help of Homeland Security Investigations and U.S. Marshals.
The fatal incident reflects a troubling trend in the city, where rising youth involvement in violent crime has become a pressing concern. Following a separate shooting over Labor Day weekend that resulted in multiple injuries and a death, Mayor Eric Adams addressed the issue in a television interview, stating, “We’re seeing shooters becoming younger and younger. This is the direct result of some of the laws that we have passed—both in Albany and City Council.”
Robin Wright’s death, a stark reminder of the consequences of unchecked violence, has left the community in mourning. Friends and family members are now left to cope with the loss of a beloved figure who sought only to embrace her recovery and enjoy life.
