Philadelphia, Pa. — A shooting on a SEPTA Broad Street Line train claimed the life of a man late Friday night as police investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. The altercation reportedly took place shortly before 7:40 p.m. on a northbound train, which had just stopped at the Girard Avenue Station when officers arrived on the scene.
The victim, whose age is estimated to be in his late teens, was rushed to Temple University Hospital but was pronounced dead at 8:09 p.m. After the shooting, a suspect in his twenties approached officers outside the station and claimed he fired in self-defense during an assault.
Inspector D.F. Pace detailed that initial investigations, including a review of security footage, appeared to substantiate the shooter’s claim. The video reportedly showed the victim behaving aggressively, pacing in the train car before violently confronting the man who ultimately discharged his weapon. Police noted that there were no indications of prior altercations or motives prompting the assault.

The shooter, who possesses a valid concealed carry permit, is expected to be taken to a hospital for treatment following the confrontation. Officers located three spent shell casings in the train car along with a trail of blood but reported no additional injuries stemming from the incident.
In the wake of the shooting, SEPTA service on both directions of the Broad Street Line was temporarily halted at Girard Avenue Station, disrupting transit for passengers as the police investigation unfolded.
