Tragic Sunday in Rochester Park: One Dead, Six Injured as Community Picnic Turns to Chaos

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A joyful picnic at a local park descended into chaos and tragedy on Sunday when a gunman opened fire, resulting in one death and six injuries. Authorities are actively seeking multiple suspects linked to the shooting, though it remains unclear whether they were part of the picnic group or outsiders, according to Police Chief David Smith.

The incident occurred around 6:20 p.m., disrupting an otherwise peaceful gathering. Attendees scrambled for safety, with some seeking refuge in their vehicles in an attempt to escape the sudden violence. Among those hit, a young individual in their 20s succumbed to their injuries, while another is in critical condition and several sustained less severe injuries.

Residents in the vicinity were caught off guard by the gunfire. Carla Owens Martin, who was near the scene, initially mistook the gunshots for firecrackers. She recounted assisting a distressed woman who sought help after the incident. “She was gasping for air, just desperate for help,” Martin explained, helping the young woman with a bottle of water and a place to sit.

In the aftermath, Rochester’s Mayor Malik Evans visited the scene, labeling the event a heinous tragedy. He strongly urged the public to assist law enforcement by providing any relevant information. “It is crucial that the perpetrators, these cowards, are brought to justice,” he stated.

Chief Smith highlighted the presence of multiple surveillance cameras in the park area and requested anyone who might have inadvertently captured video or photos of the incident to come forward. Smith expressed confidence in the capabilities of the city’s Major Crimes Unit and sent a stern warning to those responsible: “To the folks who did this, I will be seeing you.”

The police are encouraging anyone with potential evidence or information to contact local authorities using various methods, including direct calls to the Major Crimes Unit, CrimeStoppers, or through the ReportIt app.

The community is left shaken by the violence that marred what was a serene summer day. The city awaits answers as the investigation continues, hoping for the swift apprehension of those behind the attack.
