Downpatrick, Northern Ireland — A somber atmosphere enveloped the community after emergency services responded to a tragic series of events on Sunday. Police reported discovering a deceased man in the Marian Park area around noon, prompting the arrest of a 30-year-old individual on suspicion of murder.
Earlier that morning, at approximately 10:10 a.m., a violent incident unfolded at St. Patrick’s Church, where a man allegedly attacked Father John Murray, striking him on the head with a bottle. The priest is now hospitalized in serious condition following what authorities describe as a brutal assault. Superintendent Norman Haslett, the district commander for Newry, Mourne, and Down, indicated that investigators believe these incidents may be interconnected.
“Inquiries are in the early stages, and we are working under the assumption that the murder may relate to the assault on the priest earlier today,” Haslett stated. He urged anyone who may have information pertinent to the investigation to reach out to the police.
Detective Chief Inspector McBurney echoed these sentiments, condemning the attack on Father Murray as “shocking and brutal.” He also called upon the public to support the police inquiry by providing any information they might have.
Local political leaders expressed their disbelief and concern over the incidents. Chris Hazzard, the Sinn Fein MP for South Down, described the events as “deeply shocking,” emphasizing the sorrow felt by the community. “The death of a person alongside the vicious attack on Fr. Murray has left us all heartbroken,” he noted, urging anyone with knowledge of the incidents to assist investigators.
DUP MLA Diane Forsythe condemned the violence, labeling the attack on a religious figure inside a place of worship as “shocking and disgraceful.” She stressed the unacceptability of violent acts within society and extended her thoughts to both the community and the victims’ families.
Alliance South Down MLA Andrew McMurray described the incidents as “heartbreaking,” stating they left many residents shaken on what is typically a day of peace. He voiced his gratitude for the local police, praising their swift and professional handling of the dire situation. McMurray announced plans to participate in a prayer service that evening, honoring the victims and their families.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the events, urging witnesses or anyone with relevant information to contact police. Individuals can report information via the PSNI’s hotline or anonymously through Crimestoppers, emphasizing the critical role of community support in these ongoing investigations.
