LIMERICK, Ireland — The Limerick Greyhound Stadium has faced scrutiny following the euthanization of three greyhounds within the first four months of 2025 due to severe racing injuries. Reports released by Greyhound Racing Ireland (GRI) detail the tragic incidents, which occurred on January 23, January 30, and April 10.
The injuries cited in the data included serious conditions, such as broken hocks and a fractured tibia and fibula. On-site veterinarians made the difficult decision to euthanize the animals, highlighting the risks associated with the sport. In total, two additional greyhounds required treatment for non-fatal injuries, including a fractured hock and a potential wrist fracture, illustrating the often perilous nature of greyhound racing.
Through April 30, more than 28,400 greyhounds participated in races across Ireland, with 106 sustaining injuries. This alarming figure included 54 dogs that were euthanized, reflecting ongoing concerns about the welfare of animals involved in the sport. Racing fatalities were also noted, raising further questions about safety measures in place at these venues.
The issue garnered attention in the Irish parliament, where Deputy Paul Murphy of People Before Profit–Solidarity raised concerns on April 29.
