LEON COUNTY, Texas — A deputy from the Leon County Sheriff’s Office is currently recovering in the hospital following a shooting during a tense standoff on Saturday. The incident culminated in a tragedy that has left four individuals dead, including the alleged shooter and his parents, in what authorities are now treating as a possible murder-suicide.
The confrontation began when deputies responded to a welfare check about a man who had reportedly expressed suicidal thoughts and claimed he had harmed his parents. Upon arriving at a residence in the 21000 block of County Road 456 near Normangee, deputies sought to make contact with the individual.
James Scott Grigory, 38, opened fire on deputies, striking one officer in the face and arm. The injured deputy was subsequently airlifted to a hospital, where he is reported to be in stable condition and awaiting surgery.
In light of the ongoing threat, additional law enforcement personnel swiftly arrived on the scene. A reverse 911 call was issued, advising nearby residents to stay indoors to protect themselves as the situation unfolded. The Texas Department of Public Safety’s SWAT team, along with Texas Rangers, responded to the event, eventually taking control of the scene.
During a search of the residence, authorities discovered the bodies of Grigory’s father and two dogs, who also bore gunshot wounds. Grigory was found nearby with what investigators believe to be self-inflicted injuries. As the investigation continued, a welfare check conducted at another location in Harris County uncovered the body of Grigory’s mother, who also died from apparent gunshot wounds.
The Texas Rangers are leading the investigation as officials work diligently to gather details surrounding this distressing event. According to a spokesperson from the Leon County Sheriff’s Office, the department is prioritizing the integrity of the investigation and has not yet released further details.
“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy,” the sheriff’s office stated. They also expressed their support for the injured deputy, urging the community to keep him in their prayers during his recovery. The incident has shocked the local community and raised concerns about safety and mental health resources available to residents.
