Oklahoma City — Two men are facing murder charges in connection with a tragic sledding accident that resulted in the death of a 31-year-old woman. Authorities reported that Makayla Mitchell was struck by a vehicle on the night of January 25 after a sled she was riding on became detached from the towing vehicle.
According to police, Mitchell was being pulled on a sled when the rope unexpectedly snapped. The sled came to a halt in the roadway just before 11 p.m., and moments later, she was struck by another vehicle driven by 24-year-old James Kirk. Emergency responders pronounced her dead at the scene.
Investigators indicated that both drivers exhibited signs of impairment. In response, officials executed blood draw warrants for Kirk and Angel Walzier, 22, who was operating the vehicle towing the sled. Both men have been charged with second-degree murder as well as aggravated driving under the influence.
Walzier remains in custody with a bond set at $5 million. As of now, it is unclear whether either man has entered a plea or secured legal representation.
