Tragic Shooting on Spirit Lake Reservation Leaves Two Dead, One Critically Injured; Community and Leaders Rally in Response

ST. MICHAEL, N.D. — Tragedy struck the Spirit Lake Reservation on Tuesday morning when a shooting resulted in the deaths of two individuals, with a third person left in critical condition. The Spirit Lake Tribal Council confirmed that all involved, including the alleged shooter, are members of the Spirit Lake Tribe.

The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m., and by the afternoon, the Council had issued a correction to earlier reports that incorrectly stated three people had died. “We must retract that statement as updated information from law enforcement confirms that only two victims have been pronounced deceased, and one remains in critical condition,” the revised statement noted. Despite the correction, the Council emphasized that the gravity of the event remains profound.

The suspect was taken into custody shortly after the incident, at around 1:20 p.m., though their identity has not been disclosed. In a response designed to manage the situation and gather information, a shelter-in-place order was implemented, which the Council admitted may have delayed notification to the victims’ families.

The community has been asked to respect the privacy and wishes of the grieving family, with no names being released at this time. The Council expressed their apologies to the family and the community for any distress caused by initial miscommunications.

A multi-agency response played a critical role in managing the aftermath of the shooting. Law enforcement and emergency response teams included the Fort Totten Bureau of Indian Affairs, Turtle Mountain BIA, and multiple county sheriff’s departments, along with the North Dakota Highway Patrol, Devil’s Lake Police Department, and the FBI. The Spirit Lake Ambulance, Incident Command, Emergency Management Services, and Lake Region Ambulance, among others, were also involved.

Further support came from state officials, as North Dakota Governor Kelly Armstrong and General Maj. Alan Dohrmann provided quick responses and air support during the search for the suspect. “Their collaborative efforts exemplify the strength of our community and state in times of crisis,” stated the Tribal Council.

In closing, the Spirit Lake Tribal Council acknowledged the pervasive impact of the event on the community’s mental and emotional health. They reminded tribal citizens that grief counseling services are accessible during this challenging time. Spirit Lake Behavioral Health and Spirit Lake Suicide Prevention are available to provide support to anyone in need.

This somber incident has undeniably shaken the community, sparking a comprehensive response and reflection on the measures necessary to prevent such tragedies in the future. It also underscores the profound effects of violence on small communities and the critical importance of timely and accurate information dissemination in crisis situations.
