Tragic Road Rage Incident Claims Life of Pregnant Teen, Suspect Faces Murder Charges

Ponchatoula, La. — A man has been charged with murder following a tragic road rage incident that escalated into gunfire, leaving a 17-year-old pregnant girl dead. Katelynn Strate, a resident of Ponchatoula, succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday evening after being shot while riding as a passenger in a vehicle.

The incident unfolded around 9 a.m. on Sunday when Strate was in a Ford Expedition traveling along North Hoover Road. Meanwhile, 54-year-old Barry West of Tickfaw was pursuing a Dodge truck right behind her vehicle. According to the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office, the two drivers were engaged in aggressive behavior, including tailgating and sudden braking before West reportedly fired his weapon, striking Strate.

After realizing that Strate had been injured, the driver of the Ford Expedition dialed 911 and quickly headed to a hospital for urgent medical attention. Strate was found to be pregnant, and a C-section was performed to safely deliver her baby, who is currently receiving care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Law enforcement has stated that West believed the other vehicle had fired shots at him first. However, an investigation revealed that no shots were fired from the car Strate was in, and no firearm was located in that vehicle.

As a result of this incident, West’s charges have been escalated to include one count of second-degree murder, along with three counts of attempted second-degree murder, one count of illegal use of a firearm, and one count of obstruction of justice.

Furthermore, members of the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office addressed inquiries regarding West’s possible connections with the department. They confirmed that their records, dating back to 2007, do not list any employees with the last name West.

Authorities are urging anyone who might have experienced a similar encounter with West to reach out to their Criminal Investigations Division at 985-902-2088 to provide an official report. The tragic event has raised awareness about the dangers of road rage and the potential consequences when conflicts escalate on the road.
