JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — A 43-year-old man faces second-degree murder charges following the death of a 31-year-old Marine, an incident authorities believe was fueled by road rage. The suspect, James Wells, appeared in court on Monday, where a district court judge raised his bond to $500,000.
According to the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office, the confrontation occurred around 1:30 p.m. Sunday on Burgaw Highway. Wells allegedly engaged in a heated argument with Dylan Rasmussen, who was riding his motorcycle at the time. Witnesses reported that during the dispute, Wells drew a firearm and shot Rasmussen once in the chest. Emergency responders found Rasmussen suffering from a serious gunshot wound, and he later succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital.
District Attorney Ernie Lee lamented the tragic nature of the incident, emphasizing that conflicts should be resolved peacefully. “Life is way too short to engage in this type of behavior. It’s just not worth it,” Lee stated, urging the community to choose de-escalation over confrontation.
Rasmussen was remembered as a devoted husband and father of two, receiving heartfelt tributes on a GoFundMe page established to assist his family. The campaign highlighted Rasmussen’s commitment to both his military service and his loved ones, showcasing the love and strength he brought to their lives.
Ryne Snooks, a local motorcycle shop owner, described Rasmussen as a relatively new rider who had recently visited his store to buy new tires. Snooks expressed sorrow over the tragedy, noting that Rasmussen was simply out enjoying a Sunday ride. “It’s tough knowing he was just trying to have a good day,” Snooks said, reflecting on how unexpected such incidents can be.
Many in the motorcycle community are now advocating for unity in light of this loss. Snooks emphasized the importance of camaraderie among riders, suggesting that groups should come together for support, even for simple outings. “We need to stick together more than ever,” he said. “Whether it’s a ride or just heading out for a haircut, we should be there for each other.”
As the investigation continues, the community is grappling with the implications of this tragic event and contemplating ways to prevent similar acts of violence in the future.
