ALPINE, Wyo. — A tragic single-vehicle crash in the early hours of Friday claimed the life of a 47-year-old man from Wyoming. The victim, identified as Theodore Filcher, was behind the wheel of a Toyota 4Runner when the accident occurred on U.S. Highway 26 near Alpine.
According to the Wyoming Department of Transportation, the incident happened around 2:50 a.m. as Filcher was navigating a mountainous section of the highway. At approximately mile marker 121.5, he lost control of the vehicle while attempting to navigate a right turn. The SUV veered off the road, sliding 300 feet on its side before rolling over.
Witnesses reported that the vehicle flipped multiple times after leaving the northbound turnout and collided with a substantial tree on the embankment, ultimately coming to rest on the highway shoulder. Authorities stated that Filcher was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
Investigators indicated that speed may have been a contributing factor but found no evidence suggesting that environmental factors played a role in the accident. The Wyoming Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The fatality marks the 75th road death in Wyoming this year, which highlights a concerning trend, as the state is only 11 fatalities away from surpassing the total deaths recorded in 2023, a year noted for its high traffic mortality rates. Officials are urging drivers to remain vigilant and to adhere to safe driving practices, especially during late-night hours when visibility is reduced.
As the investigation progresses, the Wyoming Highway Patrol reminds the public that details may continue to evolve, urging caution and attentiveness on the roads.
